John McCririck - Channel Four Racing

One of the biggest and most colourful characters on  Channel 4 Racing is John McCririck who is known for his antics in the betting ring as well as his tic-tac signals for each of the big races. Big Mac as he is known divides opinion when it comes to racing fans but he has certainly raised the profile of the sport for better or for worse with appearances on Big Brother and other reality shows. John McCririck is not used for every meeting on the Channel with Tom Lee often being used as a replacement, he is well thought of and his betting expertise is becoming much more prominent alongside Tanya Stevenson at the big meetings.

McCririck is well known for his dress sense when presenting the racing with his famous Deerstalker Hat never far away along with his tweed jackets which are a mainstay even during the more traditional Royal Ascot meeting. Over the past few years McCririck has seen his time on Channel 4 slashed with Tom Lee sharing the role with him, he will still be a regular on our screens in the betting ring but a little less often. There is no doubt that McCririck is the most famous personality in racing when it comes to those outside of the sport which is something that Channel 4 will want to continue to take advantage of.

McCririck is no stranger to controversy with his forthright opinions often landing him in hot water with Jockeys as well as the audience. Recently he was heavily criticised for his stinging attack on jockey Brian O'Connell following his failure to lead Dunguib to victory when he was an odds-on favourite at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival. McCririck is most at home when he is down in the betting ring surrounded by punters before the start of a big race, he comes into his own as he shouts the odds down the camera whilst picking out those all important market movers.
